Take Shape for Life is not a diet. It is a program based on clinical studies* who have been successful at losing weight and keeping it off for good (average 5 years). On average, participants saw 2-5 pounds loss per week, but does vary from person to person. You will eat every two to three hours (six small meals a day). How Do Medifast Meals Work?
The Medifast meals are designed to maintain a balance between the intake of carbohydrates and proteins. The amount of protein consumed on the diet is equal to that consumed by a normal eater. However, carbohydrate level is significantly less when compared to a normal meal pattern and the carbohydrates in Medifast are low glycemic.
Carbohydrates provide most of our energy for day-to-day functioning. When an individual eats carbohydrate foods, such as bread or pasta, the body converts the carbohydrate molecules into glucose, a fuel for the body. On Medifast, the low-carbohydrate content provides only minimal amounts of glucose, forcing the body to look elsewhere for an energy source. This process initiates ketosis.
As your body uses the fat stores, they release molecules called "free fatty acids" into the bloodstream. Then the liver converts these molecules into "ketones", an energy source similar to glucose. Ketosis refers to the increased level of ketones in the bloodstream. Once you start Medifast, it takes only 3-5 days to build a ketosis level high enough for the body to use as fuel. Once you reach this point, distinct changes will be noticeable, such as more energy and less hunger.
